Trolls: Fairy Tale Cute or Mystical Monster
Presentation by Markus Krueger
Thursday, March 5, 6:30 pm
Sons of Norway – Juven Ballroom
Topic: Trolls are fun fairy tale monsters that are so ugly they’re cute. But these fairy tales are based on legends of creepy magical monsters in the woods who want to kidnap you and eat you. We will explore both the lovable and frightening sides of trolls through the artwork of Thomas Dambo’s Detroit Lakes area troll sculptures, the murals of Fargo’s Sons of Norway Troll Lounge, Fargo-Moorhead’s unique Hardanger fiddle traditions, and more.
Presenter: Markus Krueger is the Research Historian at the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County. He has been working at the museum at the Hjemkomst Center for almost 20 years now. Markus studies and presents topics on local history and cultural heritages, and he is part of a museum team that wins national awards for their exhibits. He is also an artist. His most recent obsession is building Hardanger fiddles along with master luthier Bud Larsen and the Fargo Spelemannslag. His first completed fiddle has a troll carved in it, and he will bring it to the presentation. Hopefully, someone in the audience knows how to play the thing. He and his wife Megan and their cat Inga live in Moorhead.

Supper and Movie Night!
On Tuesday, March 24th, the Kringen Lodge is hosting a supper (served from 5:00 – 6:30 pm) and view the poignant documentary, The Teacher’s Protest (80 mins). Discussion time to follow!
Brief synopsis:
1942. Occupied Norway. Teachers must join the Nazi Teachers’ League and teach Nazi ideas in their classrooms. 8,000 of them write protest letters. They are threatened with salary withdrawal and the sack.
Still, they refuse. In a desperate attempt to break them, the Nazi government arrests 1000 male teachers and sends them to prison camps, 300 miles above the Arctic Circle. The education system is in chaos, and now the battle begins.
Jon Seal’s documentary weaves together archive footage, first-hand testimony, and the skillful animation of Herlov Amland’s poignant drawings to tell this gripping story to an international audience for the first time. The Teacher’s Protest is a sad, tender, and uplifting documentary exploring a completely different kind of war story – an inspiring tale of passive resistance, where the heroes fight without weapons and still win.
